HISTORY OF ALONNIS

Alonnisos received its name in the early years of Greece’s independence as an independent state. It is interesting to note that it does not coincide with the Alonnisos of antiquity, which was called Ikos, while the name Alonnisos probably referred to the neighboring island of Kyra-Panagia. Its history does not shed light on it before and during the Paleolithic era, which is believed that the island was united with the other islands and Thessaly. However, tradition has it that the Cretans, led by the mythical hero Staphylos, established colonies on Ikos and Peperitho, the present-day Skopelos, in the 16th century BC. The colonization would flourish along with the first attempts to cultivate olives and vines.

The island follows the historical developments. The Minoan colony gives way to a society with Mycenaean characteristics. The Mycenaean city is located in the present location of Kokkinoakastro, on the eastern side of the island. In the depths of history and traditions, the place seems to attract heroes and personalities. At the end of the Mycenaean era, Achilles’ father, Peleus, arrives on the island to stay until the end of his life and rest in his beloved… Ico.

Beyond the myth, Alonnisos is considered one of the first islands in the Aegean to be inhabited in antiquity, as evidenced by the traces of a Neolithic settlement at Kokkinokastro. In neighboring Yura, human presence reaches as far back as the 9th millennium BC with findings in the popular cave of Kyklopas. It is no coincidence that the channel of Alonnisos formed an ancient maritime passage. From here, the Argo of Iason passes on the road to Colchida, as well as the ships of the Achaeans to Troy.

The island will undergo many waves. During the Geometric times the Dolopae, part of the great tribe of the Pelasgians, dominated and evolved into dangerous pirates who troubled the waters of the Aegean. The punishment would not be long in coming from the Athenian fleet, which under the command of Cimon would crush the aggressive tribe, annexing all the islands to Athens. Thus in 476 BC the island joined the First Athenian Alliance.

During the classical period, Ico appears to have had life in two cities. Moreover, in the 5th century BC, the geographer of the time, Scylax, would call it ‘dipo-lon’. One of them must have been located at Kokkino-kastro, where remains of the wall are still preserved today, and the other at the site where Old Alonnisos was built. At that time, the island was experiencing prosperity. Ico became known in the ancient world for the cultivation of the vine and the fine wine. Exports were increasing at a rapid pace. The wine was exported in amphorae that carried the inscription IKION on one of their handles. At the same time, the island gained geostrategic importance. The impressive number of shipwrecks confirm its position as a passage. It is no coincidence that it served as the base of the Athenian fleet for the matches against Philip.

The island will continue to fascinate the aspiring conquerors of the time. In 190 BC, the island was occupied by the Roman fleet. In 1204 AD, the Franks dominated to hand over the baton to other conquerors such as the Venetians in 1453 AD and the Turks in 1538 AD. During the Revolution of 1821 and in the early years of the liberation of the Greek Nation, Alonnisos attracted Greeks from various parts of Greece who, together with the local population, would create the newly established Greek community of the place.

A place of mythical heroes, ancient shipwrecks, sunken ancient cities. An area endowed with fertile land in a privileged position. An island with intoxicating charm and wine that has historically been known. Without a doubt, the history surrounding Alonnisos is a true treasure!
