At his own expense, schools were built on the islands of Skiathos, Skopelos (two-room), and Alonissos (one-room). The neoclassical designs for the schools were standard, and in addition to their practical layout, they had a very pleasing appearance. The architectural decorative elements of the facade are remembered by older residents of Alonissos, who were outraged when these were destroyed in the 1960s by local craftsmen who wanted to add a second classroom.

From the archive of Dr. Antigoni Bakratsa, who is well known for her contribution to the people of Alonissos, the following documents were found, giving us an idea of how the school was built. They were kindly and enthusiastically provided by her for the study of the island's largest neoclassical building.

Below are various documents regarding the school construction work.

The first, drawn up in 1901, concerns the sale of stone to K.G. Rebakis (contractor of the project) who originates from Skopelos.

K.P. Rembakis is buying stone from Dimitrios Papavasiliou from Alonissos. G. Rempakis drew up a document regarding the method of execution of the project and the materials to be used.

From this we learn quite a bit of information about working conditions, the production of local building materials, the method of laying foundations, etc.

Drafting of obligations

Article 3. Rubble stone. Rubble stones shall be obtained from the nearest quarries, at the discretion of the project manager engineer, and they must be solid, without earthy coating, of regular dimensions not less than 0.20 x 0.20 x 0.25. For visible surfaces, they are carefully dressed along the sides so as to fit together precisely.

Article 4. Ashlar stone. They must possess the properties mentioned in the above article, but they shall be more regular and suitably worked at the surfaces cut from the column. The external upper surface and the contact surface shall be formed rectangularly with sharp edges with a margin (anathyrosis) of 0.02 width. The joints within the wall must fit together precisely in all directions for at least 0.10 m, such that the width of the joint is no more than 0.01 m.

Article 5. Optoliths shall be made of clean clay, well-hewn, of regular shape, free of cracks, not fire-damaged when struck so that they ring, and when dropped from... they must not break.

Article 6. Roof tiles shall be of the French system, domestically manufactured, made of clear-burnt clay with a thickness of 0.008 and featuring regular ribs allowing movement of 9.2 each time along the length and 1.9 across the width.

Article 7. The lime shall be fresh in lumps without heterogeneous mixture, and when slaked in the appropriate amount of water, it must boil vigorously so as to quickly disintegrate into a pasty dough.

Article 8. The sand shall be coarse-grained, angular, and free of earth, and the use of sea sand is strictly prohibited. For sand mortars, fine sand shall be used.

Article 9. The timber for the roof trusses shall be domestic larch, and for the remaining works of Trieste or Fiume of select quality without many sharp cracks or knots. The acceptance thereof shall take place in Volos prior to transport.

Article 10. All ironmongery in general shall be of European manufacture, of the choice of the engineer directing the work, who shall proceed with the purchase thereof in Volos on behalf of the contractor.

Article 11. D. Glass panes shall be of semi-crystalline white, without bubbles or cracks.

Premiere of the work

Article 12. Foundation. The excavation for the foundations shall be made in a regular manner with the dimensions indicated in the diagram, down to a depth determined on-site, proportional to the quality of the soil.

Article 13. Masonry. The rubble masonry shall be constructed with large, regular stones, regularly bonded to one another, with abundant mortar filling the gaps between them to the point of overflow. For every square meter of surface area, at least five through-stones must be placed. The corners and door jambs must be constructed of regular, first-size stones, roughly dressed with a hammer and toothed to bond with the adjacent plain masonry. The walls shall be raised in courses and precisely leveled every meter in height. During dry weather, the walls under construction shall be sprinkled along the joints using perforated sprinklers. The split bricks/blocks shall be immersed in water before being placed. The masonry shall be filled in as solid, except that no compensation shall be given for the extra labor required to form the corners for the jambs, nor for the relieving arches.

Article 14. Roof. The roof trusses shall be constructed according to the drawings to be handed over to the contractor during execution and shall be connected by means of notches and wood screws or bolts. The tiles shall be placed in regular rows and connected to the battens by means of iron wire.

The top tiles must be fixed with cement, as well as those resting on the walls. Due to the meeting of the surfaces of the roof with different directions, the joints shall be covered with a zinc strip 0.30 in width.

Article 15. Carpentry work. The work for floors and frames shall be of first quality with proper joints, using wooden material and glues, with corners carefully worked to precise and exact right angles. All ironmongery shall be carefully and skillfully installed so that the operation of the leaves is unobstructed, and the closure secure. All doors and windows shall be secured by suitable hooks to keep both leaves open, and the transom windows by iron latches allowing their placement at various angles. The glass panes shall be secured up to the rabbet with headless cut nails and putty. The joints of the floorboards must interlock properly and not form continuous lines.

Article 16. The sand mortars shall be executed with sand mortar made of lime which has remained in the pit for at least one month; the two-coat plaster shall be applied in two layers and the three-coat plaster in three, the last of which of the three-coat plaster is carefully smoothed until all hair cracks disappear. The cement plaster shall be smoothed until it becomes glossy. Before the application of the mortars, the walls shall be drenched with an abundance of water.

Article 17. Oil paints. These are executed in three coats after the timber is first rubbed with sandpaper, in colors of the engineer's choosing, dissolved in boiled pure linseed oil without essential oils.

Article 18. It is prohibited to take arbitrary action on the walls for the placement of scaffolding. Compensation for scaffolding of all types is included in the prices of the works.

Between 1895 and 1914, 400 schools were established throughout Greece, a donation by Syngros.
